The Andalusian Association of Mental Health Professionals - Spanish Association of Neuropsychiatry (AAPSM-AEN), has agreed to hold its 11th Congress in Malaga on November 6, 7 and 8, 2014.
The motto for this occasion: "New times, wild times: resistance and mental health", invites a broad reflection on the impacts that the crisis is having on mental health. For seven years now we have been immersed, abruptly, in a process of dismantling social structures that, until then, seemed solid to us. Public health is not only not immune to this deterioration, with the drastic reduction in spending, but also runs the serious risk of becoming a commodity, thus ceasing to be a citizen's right to become a benefit system, well social security, or from private agencies. Is it a crisis or an attempt to change the social model? The public mental health care system is particularly sensitive to this change, since precariousness, caused by cuts of all kinds, produces more suffering and, consequently, a greater possibility of mental disorders in the most vulnerable people. The loss of people's own resources (employment, subsidies, homes, etc.) entails other deeper losses such as identity, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, etc.; in short, the possibility of a vital project. And, at the same time, health and social care resources are cut, which introduces us to a vicious circle that generates profound discomfort and pathology. In these circumstances, the Association of Mental Health Professionals - AEN believes it appropriate that the 11th Congress offer the possibility of carrying out an analysis of the impacts of the crisis on people's mental health: increased prevalence of disorders, suicide attempts , increased consumption of psychotropic drugs, regression in citizen rights, etc. But, on the other hand, we are forced to critically reflect on the tools available to us in order to strengthen ourselves in our daily work: what place does psychopathology occupy? Is the use of psychopharmacology appropriate? treatment that we carry out is adapted to the needs of patients and relatives? We hope that the contents are of interest to professionals, patients and relatives. We are also sure that the choice of Malaga as the venue for the Congress adds great attraction to it. We will wait for you. Sincerely. Francisco del Río Noriega Psychiatrist. President of the AAPSM-AEN.
