Researchers from the ibs.GRANADA are recognized by the Social Council of the UGR for their contribution to the fight against COVID
Francisco Gámiz, Miguel Alaminos, Juan José Díaz and Zoraida Callejas are awarded for their scientific work
“The miracle of vaccines does not exist. In Science there are no miracles. What exists in Science is the work of many people over many years”. This sentence by Francisco Gámiz, co-investigator responsible for the Nanoelectronics group at ibs.GRANADA and professor at the Department of Electronics and Computer Technology at the University of Granada (UGR) sums up very well the importance of research in this year of pandemic that society has learned, or so it is hoped, that without research there is no future.
Gámiz was one of those recognized yesterday at the Granada University Social Council awards for innovation in health. The Social Council recognized the work of the university community in this year of the covid-19 crisis. Gámiz is immersed in his project “Five seconds and fifty cents: universal platform for early diagnosis based on the multiplexing of graphene biosensors”. His research with graphene from years ago is now being applied to the diagnosis of covid-19. “Society must know that the University is the base of knowledge and the principle of solving all these problems that we have had now and those that we will have in the future”.
Professor Miguel Alaminos, co-investigator responsible for the tissue engineering group at ibs.GRANADA, was awarded for his work: “Generation of an innovative skin model based on nanotechnology as an advanced therapy drug”. "Without research in Health Sciences there is no future because health comes first," he stressed while indicating that "Granada is a leader in health and we have to take advantage of it."
Juan José Díaz Mochón, co-investigator responsible for the Nanochembio group at ibs.GRANADA, was awarded for “Detection of viral RNA and protein in circulating epithelial cells as a prognostic diagnostic tool in patients affected by covid-19”. They started with this technique in cancer and lately they are also working in pneumology and covid-19.
Zoraida Callejas Carrión was recognized for "Conversational systems for e-health". For her it was a "pride and satisfaction" that multidisciplinary work is recognized.
The event, which was held at the V Centennial Space, was chaired by Teresa Pagés, president of the Social Council, and was attended by the rector of the UGR, Pilar Aranda.
Pagés described as "extremely important" the contribution to health made by the University. He also announced that the director of the European Medicines Agency, Emer Cooke, and the president of Farmaindustria, Juan López-Belmonte, will participate in the "Dialogues with society".
