La Electrónica es la ciencia que estudia y facilita el control del flujo de electrones a través del vacío, gases, líquidos y sólidos. Debido a su pequeña masa, los electrones responden con rapidez a campos eléctricos o magnéticos que se pueden aplicar de forma controlada con fuentes de voltaje, imanes permanentes, electroimanes, etcétera. Esto los convierte en partículas idóneas para la transmisión de energía. Si, además, la corriente de electrones se modula a voluntad formando pulsos eléctricos (paquetes formados por muchos electrones) podemos transmitir información usando ciertos códigos como ocurre con las transmisiones telegráficas, telefónicas o telemáticas. Los electrones también pueden acelerarse fácilmente, provocando la emisión de ondas electromagnéticas. Estas ondas también son capaces de transmitir señales e información a grandes distancias. Esta facilidad para controlar el movimiento de los electrones ha inspirado y motivado a miles de científicos e ingenieros para construir equipos capaces de producir, detectar y manipular a voluntad las corrientes de electrones. Cuanto más pequeños son estos dispositivos de control, más pequeña es la distancia que recorren los electrones, más rápido se transmite la información y menor es el consumo de energía. Por lo tanto, la idea es reducir el tamaño de los dispositivos electrónicos cada vez más, en una tendencia que, empezando en los años 60, y denominada Ley de Moore, ha llegado hoy día a dispositivos con dimensiones de 7nm que forman parte de circuitos con más de 20.000 millones de transistores en un solo chip. Para poder explicar el comportamiento de los electrones en estos dispositivos es necesario recurrir a la Nanociencia y para fabricarlos, es necesario la aplicación de herramientas nanotecnológicas, dando así lugar a la Nanoelectrónica, es decir, la aplicación de la Nanociencia y Nanotecnología a la Electrónica. La Nanoelectrónica abarca un conjunto diverso de dispositivos y materiales con la característica común de que son tan pequeños que las interacciones inter-atómicas y las propiedades cuánticas juegan un papel fundamental en el funcionamiento de estos dispositivos. A escala nanométrica, adquieren un papel fundamental mecanismos y efectos que en al macromundo apenas son perceptibles.
