Research from ibs.GRANADA wins second prize in the National Research Awards in Sports Medicine Fundación Cajasur
Award-winning work determines the relationship between the timing of physical exercise and its impact on health
The work awarded second place corresponded to the study entitled Sexual dimorphism in the acute effect of a session of moderate intensity aerobic exercise in the morning versus the afternoon on glucose regulation, energy metabolism and molecular adaptations in the Skeletal muscle: A randomized crossover study.
This research focuses on determining the ideal time to exercise. It is well known that physical exercise modulates the biological clocks of mammalian cells, whose proper functioning is decisive for maintaining good metabolic health. The authors of the study analyze the impact of a moderate intensity aerobic exercise session in young people, in the morning or in the afternoon, and evaluate metabolic and molecular parameters, appreciating a marked sexual dimorphism and variations in time of day. . The metabolic effects are more important in women in the afternoons.
This research has been presented by a very large group of researchers coordinated by Jonatan Ruiz Ruiz, co-investigator responsible for the group. MP20 – Biomarkers of Metabolic and Bone Diseases from ibs.GRANADA and researcher at the University of Granada. The authors belong to the University of Granada, the University of Jaén, the University of the Basque Country, the Virgen de las Nieves Hospital, the Autonomous University of Madrid and the San Cecilio Clinical Hospital.
The National Research Awards in Sports Medicine are possible thanks to the sponsorship of the Cajastur Foundation. These awards are intended to publicly recognize the work carried out by different researchers and encourage excellent research initiatives in the field of Physical Activity and Sports Medicine. The awards, sponsored by the Cajastur Foundation, have increased their endowment coinciding with the 25th anniversary and have a total of 16.000 euros that are distributed as 10.000 euros and a diploma for the first place, 4.000 and a diploma for the second and 2.000 and a diploma for the third.
They have been part of the jury in this 25th edition of the awards Irene Díaz Rodríguez, vice-rector for Research at the University of Oviedo, as president; Silvia Calzón Fernández, director of the Spanish Commission for the Fight against Doping in Sports (CELAD); José Antonio Vega Álvarez, dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Nicolás Terrados Cepeda, director of the Regional Center for Sports Medicine in Asturias, as members; and Miguel del Valle Soto, professor at the Faculty of Medicine, who has served as secretary. This year, 29 candidates were presented, of which the jury highlighted their high scientific level.
