The ibs.GRANADA Epidemiology and Cancer research group receives one of the EASP Awards
One of the two prizes awarded by the Andalusian School of Public Health (EASP) and the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Eastern Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla (Ramao), has been for the ibs.GRANADA Epidemiology and Cancer research group. , for a research paper on the analysis of exposure to bisphenol-A and the risk of breast or prostate cancer.
The EASP award recognizes two scientific papers on cataract surgery and cancer. This has been indicated this Tuesday by the EASP in a note on these awards, which will be delivered in a public act when sanitary conditions allow it. Gracia Castro de Luna, professor at the University of Almería, and María José Sánchez Pérez, professor at this body dependent on Health and Families and scientific director of ibs.GRANADA, are the main researchers of each of the research projects.
The award is endowed with 1.500 euros and an accrediting diploma. The award jury was made up of two representatives from EASP and two from Ramao. In total, 12 articles published by prestigious research teams were submitted for the award.
The ibs.GRANADA Epidemiology and Cancer research group that has been awarded, led by Maria José Sánchez, scientific director of this Granada institute, was created within the framework of the Granada Cancer Registry, whose activity began in 1985. It includes researchers from the Andalusian School of Public Health (EASP) and CIBERESP with extensive training and experience in different areas: oncology, cancer epidemiology, statistics, health economics, environmental epidemiology, public health , anthropology and psychology. The researchers have participated in multicenter research projects, both national and international, related to the etiology, medical care and survival of cancer patients, environmental epidemiology and health economics. One of the group's most relevant research projects is the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), a multicenter cohort that began in 1992, with the participation of 521.000 people in 10 European countries. Its objective is to analyze the relationship between nutrition, lifestyle and environmental factors and the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases. During the last 5 years (2014-2019), the group's researchers have led and coordinated 18 projects as IPs, of which 8 are international, 6 national, and 4 regional. Some of the relevant multicenter and European research projects include an INTERCIBER excellence project, RARECARE, EPIC-CVD, EUROCARE, CONCORD, JARC, IMPACT-HTA, MAPPING and ADVANCE-HTA.
