GRANADA awarded for a study on the benefits of olive oil
The clinical team of the Nutraoleum research project carried out in the University Hospital Complex of Granada, has received the Alfonso Varela award, which is awarded by the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin of Poniente de Granada, for the results obtained in a clinical trial aimed at obtaining scientific evidence related to the reduction of risk factors for the development of chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular disease.
Thanks to this work, two new products have been developed from virgin olive oil from the west of Granada by optimizing the olive milling process and enriching it with bioactive compounds extracted from the skin of the olive itself.
With the results of this study, it has been possible to establish a cause-effect relationship between certain components in the functional oils prepared for the study and their beneficial effects on health.
This project, coordinated by the Eastern Andalusia Biosanitary Research Foundation, has been developed by the Clinical Trials platform of the Granada Biosanitary Research Institute (ibs.GRANADA) and funded by the Interconnect call of the Ministry of Industry, Economy and Competitiveness .
The test has followed the requirements required by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), to obtain Health claims of food, primary or functional, that are or want to be present in the market (EFSA, EFSA J 2011a), converting the ibs. GRANADA in the first Andalusian platform for the performance of nutritional clinical trials, related to health, at the European level.
