Research published by the Virgen de las Nieves Hospital is growing 20% above the world average.
The Granada center has registered 564 scientific publications in 2025, 246 of them in journals of great international prestige.
The Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, belonging to the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) of the Ministry of Health, Presidency and Emergencies, obtained the greatest presence in publications in the best scientific journals last year, with 2.280,4 points of accumulated impact factor, compared to 1.894,1 in 2022, with a citation record 20% above the world average.
Professionals from the Granada hospital, integrated into ibs.GRANADA, have consolidated this trajectory of research excellence with a stable volume of scientific production, with 564 publications, which have achieved the greatest impact of the last four years with 2.280,4 points of accumulated impact factor and 246 articles published in journals of the first quartile (Q1).
The hospital's research director, Encarnación González, indicated that these data show that "with the same research capacity we have achieved greater impact, as expressed in the 2022-2025 Bibliometric Dashboard, where the evolution is clear: the hospital's research not only maintains its level but also improves the quality of its publication channels."
The head of this department emphasized that “with this volume and quality of publications, we have also surpassed the strategic objective of the Andalusian Health Service's program contract, which aims to maintain or exceed the number of publications in JCR Q1 journals compared to the average of the previous three years. The hospital has achieved this, as the Q1 average between 2022 and 2024 was 222,67 publications, and in 2025, 246 were reached, that is, 10,5% above the average.”
As González explained, “this progress also translates into international impact, with a normalized citation above the world average, as indicated by the Category Normalized Citation Impact database, which reaches 1,20, indicating that the hospital's scientific output in 2025 will have a citation impact 20% higher than the global average.”
"The jump in normalized citations indicates that our publications are becoming more influential in their field globally, something especially relevant for the hospital's positioning and the attraction of talent and projects," the research director highlighted.
Clinical areas with strong editorial traction
Among the journals with the most publications from the hospital in 2025 are Actas Dermosifiliográficas (18), Journal of Clinical Medicine (17), Medicina Clínica (Barcelona) (16), Revista Española de Cardiología (15) and Clinical and Translational Oncology (9), which reflects the high involvement in research of the Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Oncology services.
The hospital's managing director, María Ángeles García Rescalvo, congratulated the professionals who have enabled "the Virgen de las Nieves to achieve its best scientific year ever, with maximum impact and more publications in high-level journals, with results that reflect that in 2025 we have maintained a very solid scientific output and, in addition, we have increased the impact and international visibility of our clinical research."
The Granada hospital has had a multidisciplinary research committee since 2019, chaired by the medical director, Manuel Liñán, in which professionals from different areas participate in order to coordinate research activities, promote the development of quality research, collaboration between research groups and ensure compliance with existing regulations.
