November 7th 2019

The Lux Mundi Secondary Education Institute of Granada visited the Cell Production Unit of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital. During the visit, the students had the opportunity to see how ibs.GRANADA researchers develop medicinal drugs for clinical use that are based on cells (cell therapy), tissues manufactured in the laboratory (tissue engineering) and genes (gene therapy). These advanced therapies are authorized by the European Medicines Agency in most cases they are medicines that are in the experimental phase (clinical trials). The manufacture of these products is very complex, it requires special facilities such as clean rooms or GMP, where they could access with the appropriate clothing; and the implementation of numerous quality controls to ensure that they reach the patient in optimal conditions.

In turn, they had the opportunity to have a coffee with science with Dr. Salvador Arias, principal investigator of the TEC03 group of Tissue Engineering of the ibs.GRANADA, where they discussed how to heal with artificial cells and tissues.
