The Spanish Society of Epidemiology interviews Maria José Sánchez, Scientific Vice Director of the ibs.GRANADA
We leave you with the interview with our scientific deputy director by the Spanish Epidemiology Society:
What is the most rewarding thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is that I really like what I do, I am passionate about it. That makes me dedicate many hours to work, surely, more than I should. The most rewarding thing is to contribute to the improvement of the etiological knowledge of cancer, and to see the improvement of survival and quality of life of many people with cancer, although there is much to know and do.
Some curious thing about you
A very personal characteristic is my empathy and solidarity with the most vulnerable children. I have been a collaborating family of a girl from a juvenile center and I have welcomed a Saharawi child for several summers. I have learned a lot from them and I have felt very good helping others.
Have you shared or do you share a hobby with a member of the SEE?
I was born in the sea and maybe that's why I like it so much. But my real hobby is TRAVELING. And although I travel a lot for work, I still want to travel on vacations and in my free time.
If you have to read an article, on paper or screen?
Almost always on paper. I like to underline articles and make annotations. I have a better photographic memory of the article on paper.
Your first SEE congress? And the last?
My first Congress of the SEE was at the XVII Scientific Meeting of the SEE. Epidemiology at the door of the future, in Santiago de Compostela, October 27-29, 1999, with other scholars from the Andalusian School of Public Health. Since then, except for health or family reasons, I attend the SEE every year. I have participated in Scientific Committees, and I have coordinated tapas and gurus sessions, as well as spontaneous tables and I have moderated tables and presented numerous oral communications and posters. See you in September in Oviedo.
What would you say to a new partner?
I would encourage you to learn all that is good about SEE, a very multidisciplinary, modern and innovative scientific society. That they take advantage of all the opportunities that the SEE offers and that they participate as actively in their area of knowledge or in more transversal areas, because together we contribute more values and build a future
