The artificial skin “UGRSKIN” developed by researchers from the ibs.GRANADA awarded by ABC Salud as the best medicine

25th October 2024

Conducted by researchers from the Biosanitary Research Institute from Granada ibs.GRANADA and the University of Granada and approved by the Spanish Medicines Agency

The national newspaper ABC has presented its 2024 Health Awards. The artificial skin 'UGRSKIN', designed by the Group of tissue engineering of the Granada Biosanitary Research Institute ibs.GRANADA and the Department of Histology of the Faculty of Medicine of the UGR, has received the award for 'Best Medicine'.

Researchers from the ibs.GRANADA and professors from the UGR, Antonio Campos and Miguel Alaminos, principal investigators of this project, have collected the award, presented this Wednesday, October 23, at the ABC headquarters in Madrid.

Developed by the ibs.GRANADA and the University of Granada, UGRSKIN is the first artificial human skin in Spain for the treatment of severe burns. The Spanish Medicines Agency has recently approved its use as a drug for advanced therapies after years of basic research.

This type of graft is performed on patients who have between 60 and 90% of their body surface burned and who do not have their own skin to cover the damaged parts with their own grafts.

In its assessment of the award, the ABC newspaper points out that “it is a skin that is created from a small sample taken from the patient himself and that provides stable coverage to patients who without it would have no other option to survive. UGRSKIN is saving lives.”
