Researchers from the ibs.GRANADA receive recognition at the Barea Awards
Researchers from the ibs.GRANADA and the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital have received a second prize for a project on the factors influencing total hip and knee replacement costs. Specifically, the authors of this work, two of them belonging to the ibs.GRANADA and the three from the Granada hospital have been Carmen Herrera, Jose Luis Navarro and Amparo Godoy, together with professionals from different centers of the autonomous communities of Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Basque Country.
In this study, in which 15 hospitals participated, it was determined that the variable that most affected costs was the management model of the different communities and not the clinical conditions of the patients. In this way, it is determined that in the Andalusian community the cost is half that in the Basque Country.
To carry out this work, factors such as the cost of the hospital stay, from the surgical intervention to discharge, and the follow-up, including variables such as emergency room visits, consultations, rehabilitation and diagnostic tests, have been taken into account. Thus it is determined that the average cost in stays is 4.500 euros and the follow-up cost of 550 euros per year.
