A test that evaluates digestive bleeding in the Emergency Department is implemented in Granada
Fruit of a research line of the MP-16 group of intestinal Immunomodulation of the Biosanitary Research Institute of Granada (ibs.GRANADA) and the study has already received distinctions such as the award for the best scientific communication of the upper digestive tract of the Disease Week Digestives organized by the Spanish Society of Digestive Pathology
The Virgen de las Nieves Hospital in Granada has implemented a test to evaluate the prognosis and treatment of patients who come to the emergency room with digestive bleeding, a tool developed by an international research group that increases survival.
The hospital center has designed a tool to assess the prognosis of patients who arrive at the emergency department with digestive bleeding, about 250 a year with a serious condition and a high survival rate.
It is a scoring system -score- created by professionals from the Digestive System Service that has been validated by an international research group and recently reported in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
With this procedure, as reported by the hospital in a statement, specialists can detect which patients are serious, prioritize care and assess whether it is necessary to undergo any intervention, be it endoscopic or surgical.
To date, there are several systems accepted worldwide, but the one designed by the Granada group is simpler, because it reduces the number of indicators recorded to six, and is focused on knowing the necessary interventions.
In addition, it can be applied to bleeding caused by varicose veins, hypertension or cirrhosis and not only to those caused by ulcers.
The head of the service, Eduardo Redondo, explained that this tool offers very fast and reliable information on which patients require treatment, which improves both survival and health outcomes.
To achieve this advance, the Digestive System team created in 2011 a database with other groups of countries such as the United States or England.
