Horizon Europe dedicates around 100 billion euros to research and innovation
On May 2, the European Commission released its budget proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for the period 2021-2027, in which it proposes a modern, simple and flexible long-term budget.
With regard to R & D & i, building on the recent success of the EU's research and innovation programs, the Commission proposes to increase investment in research and innovation by allocating € 114.800 billion in the future budget of the EU in the long term. This includes Horizon Europe, InvestEU funds, Euratom, ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) and the European digital program.
From Horizon 2020 to Horizon Europe
HorizonEurope, The new name of the next research and innovation framework program that will replace Horizon 2020, has in this commission proposal a budget of 97.900 billion euros, the maximum amount that a research and innovation program has ever received, representing an approximate increase 30% of the Horizon 2020 budget, taking into account inflation adjustments.
It is designed around three pillars: the Open Science pillar (for researchers, exchanges and projects), the Global Challenges pillar (directly supports research related to social challenges) and the Open Innovation pillar (to make Europe a broker front in market-creating innovation).
The full Horizon Europe program will be released on June 7.
