Our research group Biochemistry of Nutrition. Therapeutic implications, BioNIT, with reference CTS-461 of the Andalusian Research, Development and Innovation Plan (PAIDI), was established in 1996 and is currently made up of 14 people, the principal investigator (PI) being Dr. Ángel Gil Hernández . Its members are dedicated to both teaching and research. The first is attached to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 2 of the University of Granada and the second is carried out in the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology "José Mataix Verdú", located in the Biomedical Research Center of the Technology Park of Health Sciences of Granada. The group has actively investigated the biological functions of nucleotides in human milk, being recognized as a group of international prestige in this field. We have contributed to clarify the role of these compounds in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipoproteins during the neonatal period, and in the modulation of the immune response in experimental animals and in premature newborns. The European Union included in Directive 96/4 / EC on infant formulas an annex that recommends nucleotide supplementation of infant formulas (based on cow's milk). Through various research projects and contracts, our group has participated in the design and formulation of nucleotide-supplemented infant diets that are currently marketed by Abbott Laboratories SA, under the brand name PULEVA. Similarly, we have investigated the role of nucleotides in development and tissue repair, verifying that these compounds exert restorative effects on the small intestine and liver in animal models of disease.
