The participation of society in science and innovation is a necessary element for progress on democratic and participatory bases. Science is carried out in a social framework, in turn society is the object of scientific activity. For this reason, the interaction between science and society, in which it is framed, is a bidirectional axis necessary for progress based on respect for social values.
Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) develops different axes of the relationship between science and society, such as citizen participation, open access to scientific information, gender equality, scientific education, ethics and agreements of governance. Its orientation is deliberative, with complete transparency and participation of all the actors involved throughout the life cycle of research and innovation.
For the Carlos III Health Institute, the incorporation of the RRI principles is a priority, both as a public state entity that acts as a financing agent for research activity and as a public body that executes scientific and technical research activities of the Spanish Health System. Science Technology and Innovation. Among other actions, it participates in the European project ORION whose objective is to implement principles and values such as open science and responsible research in research centers and funding agencies. The project has nine partners in six European countries and is funded by the Horizon 2020 (H2020) program of the European Commission.
