The Virgen de las Nieves de Granada seeks a non-invasive method of early detection of breast cancer
The Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital in Granada participates in a multicenter research project that aims to develop a non-invasive method of early detection of breast cancer, through liquid biopsy, and thus know the prognosis of response to treatment.
127 patients have been recruited at this center for this study, the results of which will be known in the coming months. The procedure consists in that with a blood extraction - liquid biopsy - biomarkers are sought that facilitate early diagnosis, personalized treatment design and, in a second phase, the identification of residual disease in already cured patients.
Breast cancer is the most diagnosed tumor in women, it is estimated that one in eight women will suffer from it, and that in 2020 some 33.000 new cases will be diagnosed in Spain. The latest data from the Granada Cancer Registry place it as the cancer with the highest incidence in women, according to the Board in a note.
At the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, in 2019, almost 300 new patients were diagnosed. In its bid to advance in the cure of this disease, this Granada hospital is part of the international research group GEICAM with which it actively collaborates in the development of several clinical trials to advance the diagnosis and treatment of this tumor.
Professionals from the Oncology service are currently working on several international trials evaluating the role of immunotherapy in the environment prior to surgery, in order to increase patient survival, and on other studies that test the efficacy of different drugs. both in advanced disease and in patients with operated breast cancer, to achieve a tumor response prior to surgery.
On World Breast Cancer Day, which is celebrated this October 19, the oncologist and researcher of the ibs.GRANADA group A13-Personalized Oncology, Encarnación González, emphasizes that "research allows greater control of the disease, increases survival and improves quality of life with more personalized treatments."
The specialist, responsible for the breast consultation, sends a message of hope since "there are new, more selective and less toxic drugs that, associated with classic treatments, such as chemotherapy or hormonal therapy, allow to increase survival and improve the quality of life of in a very significant way. Furthermore, “the prognosis has improved in recent years thanks to research. There are new drugs that increase patient survival, they have been better stratified and genomic panels have been developed that allow us to differentiate which women benefit from chemotherapy and which do not.
