The ISCIII consolidates in 2021 the Alliance of Health Research Institutes (IIS)
The Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) has consolidated this year the promotion of the cooperation space between the accredited Health Research Institutes (IIS), a joint work forum created at the end of 2019 and which has been renamed as Alliance Health Research Institutes. The IIS are biomedical research centers, whose nucleus are health centers and hospitals of the National Health System, which have the objective of generating and transferring multidisciplinary knowledge to respond to the health needs of citizens.
There are currently 33 IIS accredited by the ISCIII, distributed throughout Spain, after the incorporation this month of the Health Research Institute of the Principality of Asturias (ISPA). These 33 IIS bring together nearly 25.000 researchers in the field of biomedicine and health research in Spain, and represent a bridge for the link between the scientific, academic and health care systems. The IIS model is 12 years old since its inception.
In these two years of work, the initiative to reinforce a strategy of cooperation and joint work in the IIS has allowed a greater projection of its activity, enhancing its participation in the planning of strategic lines of action and thus reinforcing its leadership and presence nationally and internationally. Last year this space also suffered the consequences of prioritizing the needs generated during the first waves of the pandemic, but throughout 2021 the shared activity between the IIS has been reinforced, with consolidated activity programming, specific objectives and various initiatives in March.
One of the main fruits of the work carried out this year by the IIS Alliance is the preparation of five documents that will be published in the coming weeks, which collect reflections on the current state, horizon for improvement and planned actions in four areas: challenges facing the development of the research career in health centers, implementation of open access to scientific production, strategies to guarantee gender equality and unification of criteria for monitoring the activity of the IIS.
The work of the IIS Alliance will continue and be strengthened in 2022 to deepen and enrich "this framework that allows improvements, synergies, shared learning and common developments to be proposed" in the IIS, according to Pilar Gayoso, deputy director of the ISCIII.
