The Biosanitary Research Institute of Granada celebrates a multidisciplinary conference on vitamin D and health

April 28th 2023

The conferences have been held in person in the B grade room of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada

The Biosanitary Research Institute of Granada (ibs.GRANADA) has held a conference on vitamin D and health this Thursday. This meeting has been organized by the group MP20-Biomarkers of Metabolic and Bone Diseases of the ibs.GRANADA and has brought together professionals from the San Cecilio Clinical University Hospital belonging to different groups of the ibs.GRANADA.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is obtained mainly through exposure to the sun and some foods such as salmon, sardines or eggs. One of its main functions is the regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, which helps maintain bone health, but is also important for other biological functions. Additionally, vitamin D has been shown to have a positive impact on the immune system, cardiovascular health, and mental well-being. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to health problems such as muscle weakness, bone fractures, depression, and an increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and some types of cancer. For this reason it is important to update the latest knowledge on the benefits of reaching optimal levels of this vitamin.

According to Manuel Muñoz Torres, coordinator of the conference and researcher in charge of the ibs.GRANADA MP20 group, “the objective of this conference is to review the scientific evidence on the role of vitamin D in different pathological processes. For this we have developed a multidisciplinary program in which doctors from different specialties such as endocrinologists, internists, rheumatologists or dermatologists intervene. In this way, the recommended values to prevent different diseases will be discussed, as well as the different treatment modalities in case of deficiency” emphasizing especially that “the collaboration of the Biosanitary Research Institute of Granada and the University of Granada with the participation of researchers of different groups is a fundamental aspect”

In this scientific conference, a multidisciplinary approach to vitamin D has been carried out with sessions distributed in two discussion tables, the first on the pathophysiology of vitamin D and its role in osteoarticular pathology and the second on extra-osseous actions of vitamin D and the treatment of hypovitaminosis D, dealing with topics such as the importance of vitamin D in systemic autoimmune diseases, its relationship with bone health or treatment modalities for hypovitaminosis D.
