The ibs.GRANADA join the COSCE agreement for transparency in animal experimentation
From today FIBAO and the ibs.GRANADA join the COSCE agreement for transparency in animal experimentation. The signatories of this document are involved in research that involves the use of animal models, either conducting it, dedicating funds for it, or supporting its developments. We are aware that a large part of society supports research with animals for biomedical purposes as long as it is carried out in a responsible manner. The biomedical sciences sector in Spain is committed to maintaining and improving the welfare of animals that are used to carry out important research with international repercussions.
Research with animal models has played an essential role in advancing our scientific, medical and veterinary knowledge. The regulated use of animal models in scientific research continues to play a fundamental role in expanding our knowledge of the mechanisms that regulate our health or the development of diseases.
A large part of our society understands that animal models are a fundamental part of biomedical research strategy. However, there are also people who are opposed to this type of research or are not sure to support it. This is generally due to ignorance or lack of proven information.
The Confederation of Scientific Organizations and Societies of Spain (COSCE), in collaboration with EARA, has developed a proposal to improve the information available to citizens on the use of animals in scientific research.
The proposal is a Transparency agreement on the use of animals in scientific experimentation . which provides four principles to help research centers improve the information provided to the public. This agreement seeks to continue the efforts initiated by COSCE in 2015 with the publication of the document on the use of animals in scientific research.
The Society's support for research requires that the scientific community adopt an open approach and take an active part in the current discussion on why and how animals are used in research and the benefits obtained through these practices.
