Ibs.GRANADA presents its Early Phases Unit to promoters of clinical trials
The same, in which clinical trials will be developed in the first stages of research, will cover professionals from the provinces of Eastern Andalusia
The Biosanitary Research Institute of Granada (ibs.GRANADA) together with the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital and the San Cecilio de Granada University Hospital have held a conference to present their Early Phases Unit to pharmaceutical promoters of clinical trials.
This type of unit is aimed at developing clinical trials in the early stages of research with a certain drug in healthy and sick patients, the so-called 'early phases'. Research in these stages allows offering innovative treatments to patients with pathologies that lack a therapeutic alternative and provides outstanding scientific knowledge, since they tend to yield highly valuable results for the final development of the project.
This event, which was attended by representatives of more than fifteen companies, was opened by the territorial delegate for Health and Families, Indalecio Sánchez-Montesinos García, who shared the table with the managing director of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, María Ángeles García Rescalvo, the deputy medical director of the San Cecilio Clinical University Hospital, Francisco Guerrero, the scientific director of ibs.GRANADA, María José Sánchez and the managing director of ibs.GRANADA and the Public Foundation for Biosanitary Research of Eastern Andalusia - Alejandro Otero (FIBAO), Sarah Biel Gleeson.
During the day, both the Clinical Trials Platform and the ibs.GRANADA strategic lines were announced. These lines go through developing a multidisciplinary scientific space in biomedicine where research projects are carried out. Managed by FIBAO, the institute is situated in a collaborative framework between the University of Granada and the university hospitals of this province, centers with a high level of care of the Andalusian Public Health System, both for Primary and Hospital Care.
Location
Specifically, the Early Phases Unit is located on the 5th floor of the General Building of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital and is a benchmark for the provinces of Granada, Jaén and Almería. As it is integrated into the ibs.GRAANADA, it can be used by all professionals from any hospital in eastern Andalusia that requires it. Its facilities have an area of 250 square meters and can serve up to 10 test subjects simultaneously. It has a consultation room, four offices and a meeting room.
It has been designed, built and equipped taking as a reference the standards set by the Andalusian Health Quality Agency (ACSA) for Early Phase Clinical Trials Units. This guarantees the involvement of the Unit in the safety of the facilities it uses, in the management of its equipment, in emergencies, in the safe control of hazardous materials and waste, as well as in the identification of occupational hazards and occupational safety. .
It is a matter of assisting in the best conditions the people who participate in the initial phases of the different trials, which aim to arrive at the best therapies that respond to diseases under study.
Accreditation program
This fact is very relevant given that the Andalusian Health Quality Agency (ACSA) has an accreditation program aimed at early-stage clinical research units. The certification process is governed by a manual that measures the quality of the units through 75 standards, which evaluate aspects related to the rights and safety of the test subject, accessibility and continuity of care, product safety, documentation and monitoring of the clinical trial, the direction and strategic planning, the professionals, the structure and equipment, etc.
