The ibs.GRANADA has participated in BIOSPAIN 2016, the largest biotechnology event and one of the largest in the world for the number of one-to-one meetings (+3.300) with participating companies (850).
BIOSPAIN is organized by ASEBIO, the Spanish Association of Bioempresas and each edition is co-organized by a local institution of the host city / region. In the 2016 edition, Biospain is co-organized by the Basque Government through SPRI, the Basque Business Development Agency.
Despite the economic difficulties in Spain during the recession, the national biotechnology sector has continued to grow, with growth rates in the sector higher than in previous years. In 2014, the Spanish biotechnology sector made up 2.742 companies that carry out biotechnology activities and 628 companies mainly or exclusively dedicated to biotechnology (hereinafter, biotechnology companies). A total of 177,973 professionals work in the sector, which generates income of € 107.788 million. Biotechnology companies (those whose main activity is biotechnology) have a turnover of € 7.591 million, according to the National Institute of Statistics (National Institute of Statistics, INE) 2014 Survey on technological innovation in companies.
In terms of turnover, 51.55% is attributed to companies that consider biotechnology as a secondary business line, while 41,4% of turnover is generated by companies in which biotechnology is a necessary tool for the production and the remaining 7,04% is attributed to companies specializing in biotechnology.
