The ibs.GRANADA strengthens its commitment to oncology research and patient associations at the 6th Oncology Area Conference
During the event, researchers and patients highlighted the impact of oncology research.
The Granada Biosanitary Research Institute (ibs.GRANADA) has held the VI Conference of the Oncology Area under the motto Synergies in Oncology ResearchThe event, which took place in the University of Granada's Faculty of Medicine's B Degree Hall, brought together leading healthcare professionals in the field of oncology, as well as clinical and basic researchers and patient associations, with the aim of sharing advances in cancer research and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration.
The event was opened by the Academic Secretary of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. María Isabel Núñez; the Medical Director of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, Dr. Manuel Liñán; the Managing Director of the San Cecilio Clinical Hospital, Dr. Manuel Reyes Nadal; and the Scientific Director of the ibs.Granada. Dr. María José Sánchez Pérez, who highlighted the importance of these meetings:
"Oncology research is a fundamental pillar for improving cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. At ibs.GRANADA, we continue to support collaboration between basic and clinical researchers to generate knowledge applicable to clinical practice and improve patients' quality of life."
The inaugural lecture, entitled "Early-onset gastrointestinal cancer", was in charge of the Dr. María Alsina Maqueda, from the University Hospital of Navarra and the Navarra Health Research Institute IdiSNA, who addressed the growing incidence of this type of cancer and the need for personalized approaches to its treatment.
Two scientific panels were held throughout the conference, addressing topics such as the application of optical genomic mapping in multiple myeloma, allostatic load and colorectal cancer risk, the impact of molecular profiling on the dissemination of circulating tumor cells in lung cancer, treatment opportunities in sarcomas, the study of the urobiome in bladder cancer, and the use of artificial intelligence in triple-negative breast cancer imaging.
One of the highlights of the day was the roundtable discussion on the role of patient associations in health research, moderated by Dr. María José Sánchez Pérez and Dr. Encarnación González Flores. Participating in this discussion were Dr. Isabel Blancas López-Barajas, researcher at ibs.GRANADA; Dr. Antonio Hermoso Quintana, president of the Patient Associations Platform; and patients Eva María Sánchez Capilla and Fernando Fernández-Llebrez González, who shared their experiences and the impact of research on their quality of life.
During the day, a poster session was held, in which young researchers presented their most recent studies. In recognition of scientific excellence, the award for best poster was presented, highlighting the importance of emerging talent in cancer research. It went to Alicia Olivas Martínez.
The scientific coordinators of the conference and co-heads of the Oncology Area of the ibs.GRANADA, Dr. Encarnación González Flores and Dr. José Carlos Prados Salazar, highlighted: "Progress in oncology requires cooperation between researchers from different disciplines. This event has been an opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen synergies, and generate new lines of work that will allow us to advance cancer research. Our commitment is to continue promoting translational research and applying the latest advances for the benefit of patients."
With this event, the ibs.GRANADA strengthens its role as a leader in cancer research, reaffirming its commitment to patient participation in cancer research and promoting innovation and multidisciplinary collaboration to continue advancing improvements in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
About the ibs.GRANADA
The Instituto de Investigación Biosanitaria ibs.GRANADA, is the only center accredited by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) that develops biomedical research of excellence in Granada and one of the four accredited in Andalusia by the ISCIII.
The ibs.GRANADA is structured in four Scientific Areas: Oncology, Precision Medicine, Epidemiology and Public Health and Technology and Advanced Therapies that develop an intense research activity and lead the transfer of research results to society, which are reflected in the 1.063 publications made in scientific journals, totaling 6.528 impact factor points, as well as 23 patents applied for during 2024.
Currently, the Institute brings together more than 1.207 professionals and 69 multidisciplinary research groups that make up, from the University of Granada, the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, the San Cecilio Clinical University Hospital, the Andalusian School of Public Health and Primary Care Centers in Granada.
The main objectives of ibs.GRANADA are to promote biomedical, clinical and epidemiological research carried out by the different groups attached to the institute and to facilitate translational research in Granada hospitals. This research activity translates into the generation of knowledge and the transfer of scientific advances towards the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of priority health problems in Andalusia.
