The ibs.GRANADA promotes collaborative biomedical research at its VI Symposium on Precision Medicine
Held at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada, the meeting brought together around one hundred healthcare professionals, researchers and patient associations to share advances in personalized medicine and foster synergies.
The Granada Institute for Biomedical Research (ibs.GRANADA) has celebrated its VI Symposium on Precision Medicine Under the motto “Building Synergies in Precision Medicine”, the event focused on collaboration between science, clinical practice and the public to accelerate knowledge transfer and improve personalized care.
The opening of the symposium included the participation of Dr. Indalecio Sánchez-Montesinos García, delegate of Health and Consumer Affairs in Granada; the Dr. Santiago Ortiz, Vice Dean of Teaching and Quality at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada; the Dr. Francisco Guerrero, medical director of the San Cecilio Clinical Hospital; the Dr. María Ángeles García Rescalvo, managing director of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital; and the Dr. Federico García, attached to the scientific direction of ibs.GRANADA, who highlighted the relevance of this scientific forum:
“Personalized precision medicine represents one of the major challenges in current biomedical research. At ibs.GRANADA, we work to translate scientific advances into clinical practice, improving the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients through more personalized and predictive knowledge,” the scientific director stated.
La inaugural conferenceEntitled "Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Practical Applications in Biomedicine and Health", was taught by Valley Coral, tenured professor in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Granada and principal investigator of the group Translational Bioinformatics (MP10) from ibs.GRANADA. In her presentation, the expert analyzed how artificial intelligence tools are transforming biomedical research and clinical practice, opening up new opportunities in personalized diagnosis and therapies.
Throughout the day, researchers from different groups in the Precision Medicine area of ibs.GRANADA presented their lines of work in the form of mini-presentations, addressing topics such as the prediction of vascular risk, neuropharmacology of pain, autoimmune diseases, microbiota, nutrition, or cardiovascular and metabolic pathologies.
During the day, a poster session was held, in which young researchers presented their most recent studies. In recognition of scientific excellence, awards were presented. awards for the best posters: The first prize It has been for work “Beyond antiparasitic activity: exploring the antibacterial potential of pyrvinium pamoate”, collected by Rubén Cebrián; the second prize and also to “Study of Sirt1 expression and CMC markers in samples from CRC patients”, collected by Paula Sánchez; and the third prize and also to “Sigma-2 receptors: a new pharmacological target for pain treatment”, collected by Maria Robles.
One of the highlights was the round table with patient associations, moderated by Antonio HermosoThe president of the Granada Platform of Patient Associations highlighted the importance of integrating the patient voice into the research process. The day concluded with the presentation of the Scientific and Technological Platforms of ibs.GRANADA, in charge of the Dr. Paloma Muñoz de Rueda, and the awarding of prizes to the best scientific posters.
“This meeting has been an excellent opportunity to share results, foster collaborations, and highlight the work of the groups that make up the Precision Medicine area. Our goal is to continue strengthening synergies between researchers, clinicians, and patients, promoting translational research that allows for more personalized and effective care,” they emphasized. Dr. Beatriz Garcia Fontana and the Dr. Juan Jimenez Jaimez, Scientific coordinators of the symposium and heads of the Precision Medicine Area of ibs.GRANADA.
With this symposium, the ibs.GRANADA reaffirms its commitment to innovation, translational research and patient-centered medicine, promoting open and collaborative science that contributes to improving the health and quality of life of citizens.
About the ibs.GRANADA
The Instituto de Investigación Biosanitaria ibs.GRANADA, is the only center accredited by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) that develops biomedical research of excellence in Granada and one of the four accredited in Andalusia by the ISCIII.
The ibs.GRANADA is structured in four Scientific Areas: Oncology, Precision Medicine, Epidemiology and Public Health and Technology and Advanced Therapies that develop an intense research activity and lead the transfer of research results to society, which are reflected in the 1.063 publications made in scientific journals, totaling 6.528 impact factor points, as well as 23 patents applied for during 2024.
Currently, the Institute brings together more than 1.105 professionals and 69 multidisciplinary research groups that make up, from the University of Granada, the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, the San Cecilio Clinical University Hospital, the Andalusian School of Public Health and Primary Care Centers in Granada.
The main objectives of ibs.GRANADA are to promote biomedical, clinical and epidemiological research carried out by the different groups attached to the institute and to facilitate translational research in Granada hospitals. This research activity translates into the generation of knowledge and the transfer of scientific advances towards the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of priority health problems in Andalusia.
