The ibs.GRANADA closes its Science Week with a day full of activities
The Biosanitary Research Institute of Granada has participated this year with 9 scientific dissemination activities, framed within the Science Week 2021. Both the research groups and the ibs.GRANADA platforms have brought science closer to education students primary and secondary in the city of Granada. Throughout this Friday, a third of the activities organized from ibs.GRANADA have taken place.
Students in the animal facility laboratories
One of the activities carried out was a visit to the Platform for Animal Models and Experimental Surgery, with the aim of promoting transparency on the use of experimental animals. The activity consisted of a talk with the basic and fundamental notions about the use of experimental animals and their importance in translation research, and then went on to take a guided tour of this platform, located at the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, to know the different areas that compose it, such as the general laboratory, the animal facility and the experimental operating rooms.
Dra. Paloma Muñoz at Colegio Juan XXIII Cartuja
Another activity led by Dr. Paloma Muñoz, head of the scientific and technological platforms at ibs.GRANADA, consisted of a talk on the instrumentation used in research laboratories, followed by an interactive competition with mobile phones to answer questions about this equipment/machinery (cytometers, confocal microscopes, thermocyclers, etc.). Titled "Science and its Instruments," it was a very fun activity. This competition, conducted by an anonymous alias, resulted in a final winner: the one who answered the most questions correctly and the fastest. It was taught in person at two educational centers: the Juan XXIII School in Cartuja and the Albayzin Secondary Education Institute.
Dra. Encarnación Fernández participating in the Science Week
To close out this year's Science Week, Dr. Encarnación Fernández, head of research at the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, gave a virtual talk to high school students entitled "Demystifying Cancer: From Prevention to Treatment." The talk highlights the importance of cancer research in improving the quality and quantity of life for patients.
