We continue with the activities for Science Week at the ibs.GRANADA with workshops and interactive science for all ages
The ibs.GRANADA has organised a series of workshops and activities within the framework of Science Week, bringing the world of research closer to students and associations in Granada. Homo Sapiens Association, on November 6 and 7, the workshop “Discovering an invisible world: bacteria, hand hygiene and the power of antibiotics”, in which participants were able to explore the microscopic world of bacteria. With practical cultivation activities and antibiograms, they discovered the importance of hand washing and the responsible use of antibiotics in everyday health. This activity was carried out by Rubén Cebrián Castillo, Federico García García, Paloma Muñoz Báez and Angela Alcaraz Martínez, researchers from the group MP13-Antiretroviral resistance in IBS. GRANADA.
In the Juan XXIII Charterhouse School, 4th year ESO students enjoyed “Science's super teams: teams that make magic in the lab” by Paloma Muñoz Rueda, head of the Scientific-Technological Platforms: Research Laboratories of ibsGRANADA. This activity consisted of an interactive dynamic where the students competed in groups using their mobile phones to learn about the research equipment. The competition, accompanied by explanations by the speaker, motivated the students to learn about the operation of the laboratories in an entertaining and educational way.
On the other hand, in the workshop “Red cabbage: a natural pH indicator”, the 3rd year ESO students of Caja Granada School experimented with the colour changes that occur in the anthocyanins of red cabbage when they react with different solutions. This activity, led by José Ángel Rufián Henares, researcher of the group E07-RESEARCH IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND CHILDREN from ibs.GRANADA, Adriana Delgado Osorio, Ángela Toledano Marín and Miguel Navarro Moreno, allowed them to discover basic concepts about pH and explore science in a practical and accessible way at the Biomedical Research Center.
The 2nd year Baccalaureate students of the Christ the King School had the opportunity to immerse himself in the fascinating world of regenerative medicine through the activity “New advanced therapy drugs developed by tissue engineering”. This session included informative talks on the latest advances of the Group of tissue engineering from the ibs.GRANADA and the UGR, focused on the use of biomaterials and cells for clinical applications. As part of the activity, the students took a guided tour of the tissue engineering laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, where they learned from David Sánchez Porras, Paula Ávila Fernández and Miguel Etayo Escanilla about the innovative drugs in development and their promising potential in the field of regenerative medicine.
Finally, in the Primary School Los Carmenes, 5th and 6th grade students participated in the talk “Math Detectives", carried out by Miguel Rodríguez Barranco, researcher of the group A17-EPIDEMIOLOGY, PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF CANCER from the ibs.GRANADA. In this talk they learned how statistical data analysis helps to detect disease risk factors. Through practical examples, they understood the role of mathematics in public health research and in the development of new treatments to improve quality of life.
