Andalusia, with 339 research projects and 5.541.000 euros, the third Autonomous Community that receives the most funding from Carlos III
The Carlos III Health Institute will finance this year 736 new research projects for an amount close to 68 million euros, as resolved in the 2012 call for grants, which this year exceeds 28 projects and reduces by almost 7 million the aid with respect to the previous call.
By communities, Catalonia, with 606 projects and 22.814.000 euros, is the one that receives the most projects and funding; followed by Madrid, with 444 projects and 19.224.000 euros, and Andalusia, with 339 projects and 5.541.000 euros.
They are followed by the Valencian Community, with 133 projects and 4.236.000 euros; Basque Country with 97 projects and 1.756.000 euros; Galicia with 81 projects and 3.035.000 euros; Aragon with 61 projects and 1.392.000 euros; Castilla y León with 57 projects and 2.088.000 euros; Castilla-La Mancha with 51 projects and 1.004.000 euros; Navarra with 45 projects and 1.869.000 euros; Canary Islands with 41 projects and 940.000 euros; Balearic Islands with 38 projects and 753.000 euros; Murcia with 36 projects and 665.000 euros; Cantabria with 25 projects and 1.130.000 euros; Asturias with 21 projects and 931.000 euros: Extremadura with 16 projects and financing of 335.000 euros; and La Rioja to which 6 projects have been admitted, with a total financing of 108.000 euros.
The first three thematic areas of funding have been Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases and Neurological and Mental Diseases and, for all the projects, those whose main researcher also performs healthcare tasks have been prioritized.
Within the program, integrated within the Strategic Action in Health (AES) that the ISCIII convenes annually, it can be observed that more than 40 percent are developed in the Accredited Health Research Institutes, out of the total, for which they will receive funding total of 29,835 million euros, a figure that represents 43,97 percent of the total funding for this call.
“This is common in all calls and has its origin in the fact that the main hospitals and centers of the National Health System, with a long research tradition, are located in these regions. However, all the autonomous communities have received funding to start new research projects”, they point out.
Among other data, they report that the gender distribution of the main researcher who leads the project has been 37,5% of women, and 62,5% of men in the funded projects; 81,79% of the financed projects belong to centers of the National Health System (SNS).
Aid to consolidated groups
One of the novelties introduced by AES 2008-2012 has been the creation of the Intrasalud project modality, which in this call has financed 17 projects for an amount of 6.172.000 euros.
The main characteristic is the type of researchers who can opt for this category and the duration of the projects, 4 years instead of 3. In this section, the researchers who present themselves must have created a consolidated research group with a thematic continuity and financing for at least nine years in public calls in competitive competition, which forces the group to have a continuous scientific production of scientific relevance in recent years.
